Tsunami detecting buoys arrived in Phuket to be installed in Andaman Sea

On December 11th, a ship named SEAFDEC arrived at Cape Panwa Port with two tsunami detecting buoys from Samutprakarn. The buoys would be installed in the Andaman Sea by staff of the National Disaster Warning Centerthis week. These are the first tsunami detecting buoys paid for by Thailand. The total budget used in the buoy installation is 162 million baht. Thayasarn Thonanond, the Chairman of Tsunami Detecting Buoy Receiving Committee, said that the buoys would be installed in the Andaman Sea. One will be installed about 250 kilometers off Phuket’s shores, and another buoy will be installed about 230 kilometers off Surin Island. If there is evidence of a tsunami such as from an earthquake or abnormal pressure under the water, the buoys will send out data to the National Disaster Warning Center within five minutes so an evacuation can be made in time.
